September 18, 2014 — As you know, we have been following the progress of proposed legislation in the New Jersey State Legislature involving ignition interlock devices and driving privileges.
Various proposals have provided for continuing driving privileges even after DWI conviction when an interlock device is installed. Some of these proposals would also reform the DWI law by making changes which would among other things, eliminate the school zone penalties that increase fines and suspensions when violations occur in a school zone, regardless of whether children are present or school is in session.
As of the middle of September, momentum to adopt these changes seems to be lost, even though a law was almost adopted last January. It seems that other priorities have come to the attention of the legislature. We will provide updated information when legislative activity resumes.
